Andrew Townsend and Suzie Bleach have an established practice based on the Sapphire Coast of New South Wales.
They have collaborated on a range of projects over 40 years and their artworks are held in public and private collections in Australia and internationally.
Steel has become the material most central to their sculpture practice and many of their works are assemblages of welded steel and salvaged objects. These are familiar animal subjects, often life size, carefully poised and disarmingly life-like. The industrial and agricultural items embedded into their anatomy describe muscle and tendon while simultaneously reminding us of another time and place. Some appear to be automatons: machines contriving an organic reality.
Their art seeks to draw the spectator in from a distance, curious to investigate and encounter tactile surfaces, material honesty, evocative details and powerful atmosphere.
Arrival, departure, deception and balance are recurring themes with the relationship between humans and the Earth a central concern.
